“£13.3M Cold Weather Payments Initiated Across England and Wales”

Must read

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in around 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This action follows a series of winter weather warnings issued by the Met Office. More than half a million households are set to benefit from the payments, receiving £25 to assist with heating expenses.

The latest round of payments has been initiated in 246 postcode regions, including locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Approximately 532,000 households, with a significant portion in Greater Manchester, are expected to receive the payments, totaling £13.3 million in taxpayer costs.

Under the DWP scheme, Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to eligible individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. While a similar heating bill support scheme operates in Northern Ireland, Scotland provides assistance for heating bills every winter without being linked to specific cold weather periods.

The trigger for a payment is when forecasted temperatures fall below zero for seven consecutive days in an area. As the New Year approaches, forecasters anticipate subzero temperatures in many regions, prompting the activation of payments. In total, 697 postcode areas have received £25 payments so far this winter.

Individuals eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the pensions > DWP scheme include those receiving benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest. Not all recipients of these benefits automatically qualify for Cold Weather Payments, as eligibility depends on several factors outlined on the GOV.UK website.

Payments of £25 are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, identified by a payment reference containing the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is required for this payment.
