An 18-year-old sex offender, Kai Edmundson, has been sentenced to five years and three months in jail for grooming a 14-year-old girl online. Edmundson, residing in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, engaged with the victim, who lived in Derbyshire, through social media platforms like Discord, WhatsApp, and Telegram.
Despite never meeting the victim in person, Edmundson manipulated her into sending indecent images and instructed her to carve his name on her neck. Their communication spanned four months, during which Edmundson coerced the victim into harmful behaviors, including self-harm and eating disorder encouragement.
The illicit activities came to light when Derbyshire Police intervened after receiving a report. Subsequent investigations led to Edmundson’s arrest by Lancashire Police East’s Internet Child Exploitation Team, where incriminating evidence was found on his phone.
Edmundson faced charges including engaging in sexual communication with a child, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, encouraging self-harm, and possessing indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty in court and received the prison sentence, along with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and registration on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
DS Nicholas Barker, from the East Internet Child Exploitation Team, emphasized the severity of Edmundson’s actions, highlighting the dangers posed by online predators. He commended the victim for her courage and urged vigilance among parents and children to safeguard against such threats.
