A series of powerful explosions shook the Ukrainian capital following a ballistic missile strike by Russia that targeted and destroyed a key power station.
The city of Kyiv witnessed a massive explosion and subsequent fire that engulfed parts of the area, illuminating the night sky over the left bank, all in the aftermath of the missile assault.
The strike, which will disrupt heating supplies as winter approaches, occurred shortly after a statement by Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy of Vladimir Putin, claiming progress towards a diplomatic resolution involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine.
Contrary to the diplomatic rhetoric, the reality on the ground depicted a scene of devastation with casualties and damages mounting in Kyiv due to the Russian attacks.
In a bid to halt the Russian aggression, Donald Trump expressed intentions to seek assistance from Chinese President Xi Jinping, a close ally of Putin, during his visit to Asia, emphasizing the need to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through various means.
Following recent US sanctions targeting Moscow’s major oil companies to pressure Putin economically, the CHP-6 power plant in Kyiv was destroyed in the overnight attack, affecting heating services in the area. Additionally, a kindergarten was damaged, casualties were reported, and missile and drone strikes hit the capital.
Proponents of the Russian incursion advocated for the complete disruption of Ukraine’s electricity supply.
Elsewhere, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, casualties were recorded, including the death of a fire rescuer and a civilian, and numerous injuries as residential structures were damaged.
The escalation continued with deadly incidents in various regions, with casualties reported in Kherson and Volgograd as Ukraine targeted strategic points in the conflict. Notably, the ongoing conflict coincided with heightened concerns among Moscow officials following Trump’s oil-related sanctions.
Dmitriev’s visit to the US for discreet discussions with the Trump administration aimed to navigate towards a potential resolution, despite the Kremlin’s reluctance to meet Trump’s demands for an immediate ceasefire.
While acknowledging President Zelensky’s flexibility in accepting battle lines, Dmitriev hinted at a possible diplomatic breakthrough in the conflict between the nations.
