A mother who suddenly lost her ability to communicate during a work meeting was stunned to uncover that she had eight brain tumors. Laura Critchley, while leading a Teams meeting in her role as SEND director at a multi-academy trust, experienced confusion and speech difficulties. Following the incident, she was escorted to her car by a coworker but struggled to start it, leading to her admission to Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Scans revealed the presence of multiple brain tumors, with seven located on the left side of her brain, responsible for speech, and one situated deeply within.
The 40-year-old mother of two is scheduled for surgery on November 19th to remove seven of the tumors. Her partner, Lee Vaughan, mentioned that doctors would examine the tumors to determine their cause. Initially planning to monitor the situation with regular MRIs, specialists opted for surgery due to Laura’s youth and overall health. Lee emphasized the importance of maintaining normalcy for their sons, Brody, 10, and Fraser, seven, during this challenging time.
The family is uncertain if Laura’s condition is hereditary, with a potential 50% risk for their children. Lee is participating in Brain Tumour Research’s 99 Miles November challenge to raise awareness and has already raised £2,000. The challenge involves activities like walking, running, cycling, or swimming, with a fundraising target of £2,740, equivalent to a day of research at a Brain Tumour Research center.
Lee expressed that Laura encouraged him to join the challenge, emphasizing the positive impact of their efforts on other families facing similar situations. He also highlighted the emotional impact of Laura’s upcoming surgery on their children, particularly Brody, who has asked difficult questions about his mother’s well-being.
Ashley McWilliams, the community development manager at Brain Tumour Research, commended Lee’s determination to transform adversity into a force for good, emphasizing the importance of every mile and donation in advancing towards a cure for brain tumors.
