TNT Sports faced backlash for their coverage of the opening day of The Ashes, with disappointed viewers expressing their frustrations on social media. Despite securing broadcasting rights for the prestigious Test cricket event over Sky Sports, the quality of their presentation did not sit well with the audience.
Viewers tuning in at 1:30 am were met with what they described as subpar and uninformed coverage. Criticisms centered around commentators not being physically present in Australia, evident when they greeted viewers with ‘good morning’ while the match was ongoing in the afternoon.
The absence of prominent cricket personalities in the commentary team drew ire from fans. Many felt that the lack of insightful analysis and the all-English commentary team failed to capture the essence of the Ashes, with viewers hoping for a more engaging and authentic experience.
While some presenters were on-site for analysis, lead commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch, criticized for their limited cricket knowledge, were notably absent from the venue, a fact that did not go unnoticed by the audience. Despite their backgrounds in rugby and cycling, both have ties to cricket, according to Mirror Sport.
Criticism continued with viewers pointing out the lack of an Australian perspective, reduced crowd noise, delayed commentary on crucial events, and limited on-ground insights. The disappointing performance of England, including early dismissals by Mitchell Starc, added to the frustration for supporters.
Starc’s impressive bowling performance, claiming six wickets as England collapsed for 172 runs, was countered by a spirited response from Jofra Archer, who made key breakthroughs for England. Captain Ben Stokes also shone, disrupting Australia’s batting lineup and securing a five-wicket haul, putting England in a commanding position by the end of day one.
