Attendees at a traditional city’s holiday event have taken to social platforms to express their dissatisfaction with the lack of festive ambiance, high costs, and overcrowding. One disappointed visitor went as far as deeming it the ‘worst Christmas market I’ve ever visited’.
The Bath Christmas Market, currently ongoing in the heart of the historical city until December 14, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The official website portrays a cozy festive setting, describing it as a place where visitors can stroll through Bath’s historic downtown, turned into a winter wonderland with charming chalets, unique presents, and gourmet cuisine and drinks to delight the palate. It invites everyone to partake in a cherished tradition that brings the Christmas spirit to life in the city center.
The city, famous for its Georgian architecture, was recently crowned the UK’s best Christmas Market after winning the title of the readers’ favorite mid-sized city in the UK by Which?, according to reports by the Express.
Which? lauded the city, affirming that it received four stars for its culinary offerings and cultural attractions in their survey. During Christmas, the market boasts over 200 chalets, making the festive season even more delightful. Moreover, as it marks its 25th anniversary this year, visitors can expect an extra dose of holiday cheer.
The publication also praised the variety of local products available at the market, highlighting the numerous artisan stalls from vendors based in Bristol and the South West of England. They also recommended exploring the towering Bath Abbey and the ancient Roman Baths, dating back to 75 AD, once visitors have finished their market experience.
Despite the positive accolades, some TikTok users who visited the market expressed disappointment with their experiences.
Sharing their thoughts under @escaping2paradise, one individual started their video by describing Bath Christmas Market as the worst they’ve been to, emphasizing the lack of Christmas ambiance and subpar customer service. Criticisms included the absence of Christmas music and greetings from vendors, painting a bleak picture of the market experience.
Another TikTok user, Anni Bronning, known as @anniraddy, uploaded a video titled “Bath Christmas Market is a hellscape,” illustrating the crowded nature of the market. She mentioned the lack of available tables in pubs and the overwhelming number of visitors squeezing through the market.
Residents also joined the conversation, expressing frustrations about the market’s current state. Some complained about increased crowding and disturbances in the area, showing a shift from the market’s previous charm.
However, not all visitors shared negative feedback. User @lifewithkourt contradicted the criticism, sharing a positive experience at the market and encouraging others not to be discouraged by the negative reviews.
When asked for a response, Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for Communications and Community, defended the market, dismissing the negative social media comments as unfounded. She emphasized the market’s success in Europe, its positive impact on local businesses and employment, and the overall positive experiences shared by stallholders and visitors.
