The family of a teenage boy who was reportedly splashed with petrol and set on fire has disclosed the severe nature of his injuries.
On the evening of October 13, Jacob Thompson, 19, was walking along Cowper Street in Coonabarabran, Australia, when a man and two women approached him. According to police reports, a member of the group poured a liquid on Jacob, causing him to catch fire. Bystanders managed to put out the flames before Jacob was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Jacob’s family has shared that he suffered burns on 32% of his body, including extensive third-degree burns on his face, torso, arms, back, and legs. Due to the seriousness of his injuries and the impact on his airways, Jacob was airlifted to Sydney and put into a medically induced coma on life support.
Currently, Jacob is under intensive care at Concord Hospital in Sydney, where his family has been supporting him throughout his recovery journey.
In a statement, the family expressed the profound trauma they experienced witnessing the incident, which has left lasting physical and emotional scars that will take time to heal.
Authorities confirmed that a 45-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 17-year-old girl were apprehended at a nearby location. The man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent and affray, while the woman was charged with affray. They were denied bail, while the teenage girl was released pending further investigation.
To assist the family during their relocation and Mr. Thompson’s recuperation, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated. The fundraiser aims to gather support to aid Jacob and his family in rebuilding their lives.
