British Couple Ditches Traditional Christmas for Tapas and Sangria in Benidorm

Must read

Opting for tapas in place of traditional Christmas fare, and sangria over Brussels sprouts, a British couple is preparing to celebrate Christmas Day in Benidorm, a Spanish coastal town they have frequented over 100 times.

Roger and Sue Topp, hailing from Leicester, have been journeying to Benidorm for over 35 years, considering it their “second home” where they also spent quality time with their children. Roger remarked, “We used to opt for vacations in the UK, but the unpredictable weather led us to Benidorm once, and we never looked back.”

“The place is welcoming, tidy, secure, and offers exceptional value. A glass of wine costs just one to two euros, and a full meal is cheaper than a local takeaway,” they shared, emphasizing that Benidorm’s blend of sunshine, entertainment, and community is unmatched in their eyes.

The couple frequents the seaside destination thrice annually, flying from East Midlands Airport to escape the chilly British winters. They lodge at the esteemed Hotel Rio Park, conveniently situated a brief 10-minute stroll from Benidorm’s bustling main thoroughfare, where they will spend this Christmas.

Celebrating 55 years of marriage, Roger and Sue will jet off to Benidorm on December 23, marking their eighth visit to the town this year alone. Their preferred buffet is already planned, eschewing Brussels sprouts entirely, with plans to connect with family back home via FaceTime before reveling in the warm winter climate.

“Our initial Christmas experience there was extraordinary. The Rio Park Hotel lays out a lavish spread for us, including breakfast, a grand traditional Christmas lunch, day-long entertainment, and unlimited wine and beer. It’s fantastic and alleviates so much stress, which is why we have always cherished TUI holidays,” they expressed.

“The Hotel Rio Park holds a special place in our hearts, providing all essential amenities and being close to the beach, not to mention the exceptional staff who have become lifelong friends,” they added.

When not enjoying the hotel’s amenities, Roger and Sue relish basking in the sunshine on the vast sandy beaches or exploring the Old Town. A Chinese buffet named Puente De Oro, where they can feast extravagantly, stands out as a personal favorite.

“We adore the Chinese buffet there, offering generous servings and unlimited drinks for 19 euros. The cuisine is fresh, delightful, and offers incredible value. We frequent it often, sometimes with large groups of 20 regular Benidorm visitors,” they divulged.

Moreover, they indulge in an array of tapas, especially at a nearby Tapas bar called Zodiac, where 6 plates of tapas and a bottle of wine go for a mere 9 euros. The quality and price keep them coming back repeatedly.

Having arranged their Benidorm getaways with TUI on numerous occasions, they are well-known at their local store, commending the team for their seamless service. Roger mentioned, “We drop by for a chat or a cuppa. They take care of everything for us, and have become like family.”

TUI Travel Agent Cameron Morton, stationed at the Hinckley store, has been assisting the couple in booking their Benidorm excursions for over a decade. “They’ve been loyal customers for about 10 years, planning multiple trips ahead each year. They have a strong affinity for the Rio Park, viewing it as a home away from home where they meet friends every visit,” Cameron shared.

“Benidorm offers exceptional value, with affordable accommodations, dining, and entertainment, making it an ideal destination in partnership with TUI,” they emphasized.

Despite their 100+ visits to Benidorm, Roger and Sue show no signs of halting their annual trips, expressing utmost admiration for the destination. “Disregard the stereotypes. It is one of the most hospitable, budget-friendly destinations with offerings for all ages and budgets. If you don’t relish Benidorm, the fault lies with you,” they asserted.
