“Gordon Brown Urges Action on Child Poverty”

Must read

Gordon Brown, a longtime advocate for addressing child poverty, is being recognized for his efforts during his tenure in the previous Labour government. Despite these past initiatives, the current child poverty rate remains high at approximately 4.5 million children, a 60-year peak, prompting the former Prime Minister to continue addressing the issue.

During a recent speech commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Child Poverty Action Group, Brown passionately labeled child poverty as a “blemish on our nation’s conscience.” Just ahead of the upcoming Budget, he called for the complete elimination of the two-child benefit restriction, which remains a topic of active discussion within the government.

While Brown delivered the keynote address, another prominent Labour figure, Angela Rayner, attentively sat among the audience, garnering attention for her presence. Brown praised Rayner, receiving applause from the audience, with Homelessness Minister Alison McGovern commending her dedication in government.

Following Rayner’s departure from the core of Keir Starmer’s administration due to tax issues related to a seaside property, she has maintained a low public profile. Despite her absence from the Labour annual conference, her return was strongly endorsed by party loyalists, emphasizing the need for her reinstatement.

After resigning, Rayner resurfaced over a month later with a statement in the Commons, reaffirming her commitment to advocate for critical government issues. Notable among her contributions are the recently approved Renters’ Rights Act and significant enhancements to workers’ rights through the Employment Rights Bill, which she defended in a recent parliamentary session.

Although Rayner was not leading the child poverty task force, she showed a keen interest in its development during her time in government. Her relationship with Brown, whom she views as a mentor and has shared a close political bond with for more than a decade, was evident as she listened to his speech.

A close associate of Rayner mentioned to The Mirror, “This is a cause deeply important to Angela. She greatly admires Gordon, and she is heeding his words.” In 2020, Rayner strongly criticized the two-child benefit restriction as “inhumane,” maintaining the government’s stance during her deputy role despite calls for its elimination. However, if the government fails to meet Brown’s objectives for the child poverty task force, Rayner may be inclined to voice her concerns.
