“NATO Forces Take Down Drone Near US Base in Estonia”

Must read

NATO forces have successfully taken down an unidentified drone that was observed flying near a military installation utilized by US troops in Estonia, near the Russian border. Camp Reedo, a US Army base in Europe and Africa, where the drone was seen hovering, is situated less than 30 miles from the Russian boundary. This incident occurred on October 17 but has only recently been disclosed.

Two drones were sighted in the vicinity, with one being destroyed, although it remains uncertain if US forces were involved. The Estonian Defence Forces headquarters spokesperson, Liis Vaksmann, stated that the drones were detected near the 2nd Infantry Brigade’s base and one was brought down using an anti-drone weapon.

Estonian military and law enforcement agencies conducted a search for the downed drone but were unsuccessful in locating it. Last month, three Russian MiG-31 fighters breached Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland, lingering for 12 minutes.

Estonia is deemed one of NATO’s most vulnerable members facing the threat of Russian aggression. British troops are also stationed in Estonia as part of a NATO battlegroup since 2017 to deter Russian hostilities. The Reedo base accommodates the US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the need for NATO to be ready to intercept and bring down any aircraft violating sovereign airspace. Tsahkna stressed the importance of a firm response to future violations, including the interception and downing of intruding aircraft to defend not only Estonia’s borders but also NATO’s borders.

Simultaneously, Ukraine conducted significant strikes on Russia overnight, causing substantial damage to oil and petrochemical facilities. Strikes targeted various locations, resulting in fires and damage to oil depots, power plants, and refineries in different regions of Russia. The ongoing Ukrainian campaign to bomb oil plants has led to petrol price hikes and supply shortages in Russia.

In response, Russia also launched strikes in several regions, targeting power stations and chemical plants. The escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia have raised concerns about further military actions and their impact on the region.
