Labour’s welfare chief, Pat McFadden, has pledged that any future reforms will not include arbitrary benefit cut targets. McFadden emphasized the importance of focusing on providing opportunities for work rather than solely aiming for savings, aiming to move past previous divisions. The Government faced backlash over proposed cuts to personal independence payments (PIP) and Universal Credit health top-ups, leading to a rethink on welfare reforms.
During a visit to a new youth employment hub at Peterborough United’s Weston Homes Stadium, McFadden stressed the need for welfare reform to prioritize working opportunities over benefit cuts. He emphasized the goal of making the welfare state a platform for enhancing job prospects and opportunities.
McFadden highlighted plans to expand the number of youth employment hubs to 200, aiming to assist young people in finding work. These hubs not only offer job-seeking support but also provide guidance on housing, health, and financial advice, creating a more holistic approach compared to traditional Jobcentres.
The initiative received praise from Peterborough’s mayor, Paul Bristow, who expressed support for efforts to boost youth employment. Bristow noted the hub’s appeal to young jobseekers, citing its comprehensive services ranging from employment assistance to health and housing advice.
Debbie Cook, the English Football League’s director of community, commended the opening of the youth hub at Peterborough United in collaboration with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority. She highlighted the positive impact of such initiatives in empowering individuals and promoting community engagement.
The commitment to enhancing opportunities for young people through initiatives like the youth hub aligns with Labour’s youth guarantee, offering paid work placements to those out of work or education for an extended period. McFadden emphasized the importance of supporting young people in transitioning from education to employment, aiming to prevent long-term dependency on welfare benefits.
