Several prominent snooker players, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their thoughts on a particular rule they believe should be revised in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, top professionals in the game were asked about a potential change they would make to snooker regulations, with a common concern emerging.
Renowned seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, among others, has called for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a contentious issue for top players. Currently, if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball, known as a ‘miss,’ due to an inadequate attempt, the referee may penalize them with a foul.
The ‘miss’ rule is typically enforced when the referee believes a player opted for a more difficult shot rather than a simpler escape from a snooker, or if a player underplays a shot, indicating lack of effort.
Following a ‘foul and a miss’ call, the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a reattempt or leave them as they are on the table. Repeated ‘foul and a miss’ calls can lead to a situation where the player is stuck repeating the same shot indefinitely, allowing their opponent to score points without much effort.
Additionally, the ‘three-miss rule’ stipulates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball three times consecutively automatically forfeits the frame to their opponent. This rule has sparked debates within the sport due to concerns about inconsistent enforcement, game pace, and viewer comprehension.
When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan promptly highlighted the ‘miss rule,’ with Wilson echoing the sentiment by suggesting a limit of three misses. Selby also weighed in, proposing a restriction where a player can only miss three times before conceding the frame to prevent undeserved victories due to repeated fouls.
Former world champion Murphy raised concerns about how the ‘miss’ rule could be exploited, advocating for a revision to prevent intentional fouls. World number three Neil Robertson offered an alternative reform, proposing a free ball for the opponent if a player fails to make contact with a visible red, aiming to expedite gameplay.
However, recommendations for changes extended beyond the ‘miss’ rule, with players also questioning the traditional dress code requirements in snooker. The mandatory attire of long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear has received criticism from some players, suggesting a more relaxed approach could be beneficial.
In response to the same question, Mark Allen emphasized the need to relax the dress code, while Luca Brecel listed dress code, shot clock implementation, and compulsory cushion contact as his top three areas for potential adjustments in the sport.
