BT has announced a significant update regarding landline services, urging households using this technology to pay attention. The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communication for over a century are being phased out, with less than a year remaining before the shutdown on January 31, 2027.

The transition to new digital services utilizing the internet for calls is imperative, as stated by companies like BT, citing the outdated copper system’s issues of overload, unreliability, and failure to meet modern connectivity standards.

BT’s latest system, Digital Voice, promises a more reliable connection and added features such as clearer audio quality, call forwarding to mobile phones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing.

While over three million UK homes have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more households still need to transition. BT emphasizes the importance of taking action, warning customers that ignoring communications from their provider could result in disruptions to phone or broadband services as the deadline approaches.

As the era of copper wires draws to a close, it is crucial to ensure that your landline and home phone are prepared for the upcoming changes. The switching process is straightforward, with most BT handsets compatible with digital landlines, allowing customers to retain their existing numbers without any price increase. In certain cases, connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket may suffice, but contacting the provider or arranging an engineer visit could be necessary if issues arise.

BT also advises customers with specific needs, such as those reliant on telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly for tailored support arrangements.
