A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing the death of an 85-year-old grandfather in Wakefield after running him over while checking his mobile phone. Qabir Hussain, 54, was found guilty of dangerous driving by Leeds Crown Court, according to West Yorkshire Police.

The granddaughter of the victim, David Brooke, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing her grandad as a beloved and cherished family member. She lamented the impact of his death on their family, emphasizing the void left by his absence and the lasting memories they hold dear.

Following the tragic incident, authorities discovered that Hussain had unlocked his phone and accessed emails and a web browser while driving. Detective Sergeant Nina Roper from the Major Collision Enquiry Team highlighted the devastating outcome of distracted driving, underscoring the importance of maintaining focus on the road.

DS Roper emphasized the gravity of using a phone while driving, citing it as one of the “Fatal Five” offenses that significantly contribute to serious and fatal accidents. She urged drivers to prioritize safety over distractions, reminding them of the irreplaceable value of human life on the road.

In addition to phone usage, the police identified speeding, driving under the influence, lack of seatbelt use, and careless driving as part of the “Fatal Five” offenses that pose serious risks to road safety. The authorities are committed to raising awareness and promoting responsible driving practices to prevent further tragedies like the one involving David Brooke.
