Keir Starmer has emphasized that any form of criticism directed at a member of his Cabinet is completely unacceptable amidst reports of internal leadership plots targeting Wes Streeting.
In his first remarks following the emergence of a contentious round of briefings within the government, the Prime Minister also commended the Health Secretary for his commendable performance. Recently, Mr. Streeting refuted allegations of planning a coup against Mr. Starmer as speculations about the Prime Minister’s future surfaced.
During the PMQs session addressing the internal conflict, Mr. Starmer lauded the Health Secretary’s efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists, although he faced jeers from the opposition as he stressed the unity within the Cabinet.
Furthermore, Mr. Starmer affirmed that his chief-of-staff, Morgan McSweeney, and the rest of his team remain dedicated to serving the nation effectively.
Responding to inquiries from Tory leader Kemi Badenoch regarding claims of a “toxic culture in Downing Street,” Mr. Starmer reiterated his commitment to rebuilding the country and strongly condemned any attacks on his Cabinet members.
He praised Mr. Streeting for surpassing expectations by delivering five million additional appointments within the first year of a Labour government, exceeding the initial two million target.
Following the need to clarify his stance on Wednesday morning, Mr. Streeting emphasized that a leadership challenge within Labour would be counterproductive and denied any intentions of orchestrating the Prime Minister’s removal.
Drawing a comparison to Celebrity Traitors, Mr. Streeting criticized the ongoing internal strife, labeling it as the most severe betrayal since the expulsion of rugby player Joe Marler in a recent BBC event. He expressed his unwavering support for the Prime Minister.
