“Starmer Condemns ‘Unacceptable’ Assaults on Wes Streeting”

Must read

Keir Starmer has strongly criticized the “unacceptable” assaults on Wes Streeting following a failed attempt by No10 to repel challenges to the PM’s position.

Supporters of the Prime Minister initiated a preemptive move against a potential post-Budget rebellion, cautioning that Mr. Starmer would resist any efforts to depose him. However, the plan, which seemed to target the Health Secretary, ended in a significant setback.

A conflict emerged on Wednesday as Mr. Streeting condemned the “toxic environment” in No10, with one MP likening aides to characters from a popular TV series. Mr. Starmer felt compelled to publicly distance himself from the attacks in the House of Commons on Wednesday, throwing his support behind his Health Secretary, whom he praised for doing “an excellent job.”

“I find any form of attack on a member of my Cabinet completely unacceptable,” he stated, emphasizing that he had never approved any negative disclosures about his top team members. Following a briefing, the PM’s political spokesperson affirmed: “As previously stated, any unofficial briefings against Cabinet Ministers will be addressed.”

The spokesperson confirmed the PM’s full confidence in his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, whom some MPs tried to implicate in the briefing.

Mr. Streeting vehemently refuted allegations that he was scheming to overthrow the PM during a planned media appearance before a significant speech on the NHS. He denounced the “counterproductive” rumors being spread by individuals overly engrossed in certain TV shows.

“This is among the most damaging attacks on loyalty I’ve witnessed since Joe Marler was ousted and exiled in the final,” he remarked. “It’s a completely counterproductive briefing, not least because it’s false, and I fail to see how it benefits the Prime Minister in any way.”

Blaming a “toxic atmosphere” in Downing Street, Mr. Streeting insisted that those behind the briefings should be dismissed. He criticized the practice of labeling Labour MPs as unruly and attempting to undermine a team member who is not only advocating for the government but also implementing the promised changes as self-defeating and self-destructive behavior.

The dispute arises amidst concerns among MPs as Mr. Starmer faces challenges in improving Labour’s polling standings in light of a surge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. It also occurs just before Rachel Reeves delivers a crucial Budget, anticipated to include tax increases that deviate from the party’s manifesto.

Labour MPs expressed frustration on Wednesday over the decision to intensify speculations about Mr. Starmer’s future. A Labour MP told the Mirror: “Frankly, the PM hires inexperienced individuals. The operation was effectively preparing MPs for a challenging Budget with numerous briefings and meetings, only to sabotage it by needlessly targeting Wes?”

Another MP questioned the PM’s competence, highlighting the inconsistency between his assured international stance and his ineffectiveness in dealing with his own MPs.

Jo White, chair of the Labour MP Red Wall group, cautioned against public infighting, emphasizing the need for unity. She criticized MPs who engage in selective media briefings and urged No10 to cease undermining Wes through briefings.

Despite the briefings, one minister dismissed the controversy, urging the party to focus on their duties.
