Paul Lim has once again etched his name in the annals of darts history by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at Ally Pally. The 71-year-old has solidified his position as the oldest player to secure a victory at the PDC World Championship.
In a surprising turn of events, Lim outplayed his opponent, who is 35 years younger, with a 3-1 victory, securing his spot in the second round. This victory comes 44 years after his inaugural appearance at the World Championship.
Having qualified for Ally Pally after his last participation in the 2022 World Championship, where he was defeated by Joe Murnam in the first round, Lim showcased a solid performance with an average of 86.52 and two 180s. Despite a below-par performance from De Graaf, Lim managed to emerge victorious.
Expressing his gratitude after the win, Lim acknowledged the support of the crowd and emphasized the significance of just being present at the event. He highlighted the importance of seizing opportunities in the game.
Lim’s previous notable victory was against Luke Humphries in the prior year’s championship. If Humphries defeats Ted Evetts in the upcoming match, the two players will face each other again in the second round.
Praising Humphries for his dedication and skills, Lim expressed his admiration for the player while remaining optimistic about his chances of winning against him.
Known as the “Singapore Slinger,” Lim has become a legendary figure in the world of darts due to his enduring career. Notably, he achieved the feat of hitting a nine-darter in the 1990 BDO tournament against Jack McKenna, earning a substantial £52,000 prize.
