“Lost Pension Funds Worth £31.1 Billion Uncovered by Penny App”

Must read

Many individuals may lose track of their pension funds over time, particularly if they frequently switch jobs. Recent research from the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) indicates that an estimated £31.1 billion is currently unclaimed or lost in pension pots.

One man, John Ferguson, 32, residing in Edinburgh and employed in the security sector, discovered £10,000 in missing pension funds by utilizing the Penny app. Through the app, he identified seven pension pots, two of which he was unaware of previously, and suspects there may be more undiscovered pensions awaiting verification.

Ferguson praised the Penny app for its user-friendly approach, stating that minimal information input was required for assistance. The app operates by cross-referencing your National Insurance number with details of past employment or pension providers to locate missing pensions.

While the Penny app offers the option to consolidate multiple pensions into a single fund, individuals should consider factors such as transfer fees from existing providers, potential loss of benefits like guaranteed annuity rates, and the charges associated with the new provider. Seeking advice from a pension expert before making decisions regarding retirement funds is advisable.

For those seeking lost pensions, the Government’s Pension Tracing Service is a valuable tool that requires inputting previous employment details to retrieve contact information for pension providers. However, detailed investment amounts are not provided through this service; individuals must contact the pension administrator directly for such information.

Additionally, a new pensions dashboard tool is set to launch this year, enabling individuals to view all their pension information in one centralized platform. By October 31, 2026, approximately 3,000 providers and schemes are expected to be integrated into the dashboard for enhanced accessibility and oversight of pension assets.
