“Backpacking Tragedy: Woman Dies from Methanol-Laced Shots”

Must read

A tragic incident occurred as a woman passed away after consuming shots tainted with methanol. Bethany Clarke, a 28-year-old individual from Orpington in southeast London, embarked on a backpacking journey across Southeast Asia alongside her close friend, Simone White, also 28 years old. During their travels from Cambodia to Laos, the pair indulged in bootleg alcohol, leading to a fatal outcome for Simone.

Bethany recounted their experience of ingesting methanol-laced shots, consuming several each mixed with Sprite. The following day, they both felt unwell, attributing it initially to a hangover, although the symptoms were unusual and unpleasant. Despite their discomfort, they proceeded with their plans, including visiting the Blue Lagoon and engaging in kayaking activities. Unfortunately, their condition deteriorated, with Simone exhibiting signs of vomiting and weakness, indicative of methanol poisoning.

After boarding a bus to their next destination, Bethany fainted, and Simone’s health continued to worsen. They sought medical attention at a local hospital, where the staff initially misdiagnosed their illness as food poisoning. Subsequently, they were transferred to a private hospital, but despite efforts to save Simone, she succumbed to the poisoning. The confirmation of methanol poisoning came two weeks later, too late to save Simone.

In the aftermath, Bethany has become an advocate for raising awareness about methanol poisoning, emphasizing the lack of public knowledge and government initiatives in the UK compared to other countries like Australia. She highlighted the need for enhanced education and preventive measures to avoid further tragedies. Recently, the Foreign Office expanded its list of countries at risk of methanol poisoning due to counterfeit alcoholic beverages, underscoring the dangers associated with such products. Methanol poisoning can lead to severe symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and vision impairments, necessitating prompt recognition and treatment.
