A woman aged 59 lost her life in a tragic incident where she was fatally trampled by a group of cows while walking her dog, as revealed during a coroner’s hearing held recently.
The victim, Rebecca Jane Hitchings, was on a walk with her dog on Exmoor when she encountered the herd of cows, according to details presented at an inquest in Devon.
Residing in Woodcombe near Minehead, Somerset, the retired nurse met with the unfortunate incident and eventually succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Plymouth last week.
Senior coroner Philip Spinney of Devon mentioned that Ms. Hitchings was found in a field with severe injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, but medical efforts to save her were unsuccessful.
Her death was attributed to hemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt trauma, as confirmed by the coroner’s court, with the date of death recorded as Thursday, October 16th.
The inquest has been adjourned for a comprehensive hearing scheduled for a later date, with a probable transfer of the case to the Somerset coroner, as informed by Mr. Spinney.
This incident follows a recent event in Austria where an 85-year-old hiker was fatally trampled by a group of cows while out walking with his wife and dog.
The elderly man, accompanied by his 82-year-old wife, was attacked by nine cows on their way to a mountain hut in Ramsau am Dachstein, Styria province, Austria.
Eyewitnesses reported that the cows reacted suddenly, possibly startled by the couple’s dog, leading to the tragic outcome.
Upon the attack, fellow hikers and staff from the mountain hut rushed to assist the couple, who were then taken to a hospital in Salzburg for medical attention.
Sadly, the man passed away before emergency surgery could be performed, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Visitors are advised to exercise caution when around cows, especially if accompanied by dogs, as such situations can potentially agitate the animals and provoke aggressive behavior.
In a separate incident, a farmer in China met a tragic fate after being fatally crushed by one of his cows during feeding time earlier this year. The elderly farmer was attacked by one of his cows, leading to a fatal outcome.
This distressing incident occurred in central China on April 11 and was a result of the cow charging at the victim while he was feeding the animals in the cowshed, causing fatal injuries.
