Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new photographs from the site of a tragic accident involving renowned British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The agency has also issued a detailed account of the incident that claimed the lives of two individuals.
Anthony Joshua was hospitalized after being extricated from the wreckage of the SUV he was traveling in with a driver and other passengers on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria on Monday morning. According to reports, a blown tire caused the vehicle Joshua was in to veer off course and collide with a parked truck after losing control.
The Ogun State police have initiated an investigation into the matter, while the FRSC has provided an update on the situation. The organization’s social media post on X at 2:10 pm GMT on December 29 displayed four previously unreleased images of the damaged SUV and the truck it struck.
In the images, officials can be seen at the scene alongside witnesses, with the back of the truck cordoned off. The FRSC’s statement, composed over multiple posts, confirmed the involvement of a black Lexus Jeep carrying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck in the accident.
The statement detailed that the crash occurred around noon local time and involved five adult males, resulting in two fatalities, one injury, and two unharmed individuals. Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive. The injured individual was taken for medical treatment, and the deceased were transported to a local morgue.
The FRSC attributed the accident to the speeding vehicle losing control during an overtaking maneuver and crashing into the parked truck. They emphasized the dangers of excessive speed and reckless overtaking on Nigerian roads, urging motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a swift recovery. They reiterated the importance of safe driving practices, especially during the holiday season, to reduce road accidents and fatalities nationwide.
Preliminary reports from the Ogun State government indicated that the two individuals who lost their lives were foreign nationals. Anthony Joshua has not made any public statements since the incident, and his current location remains undisclosed by authorities.
