“UK Considers Sanctions on Sudan Over Atrocities”

Must read

The United Kingdom is considering imposing sanctions on individuals involved in the violent civil conflict in Sudan, with Members of Parliament being briefed on the visible aftermath of massacres from space. Satellite images presented by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper revealed disturbing scenes of bodies piled up and bloodstained sand following the takeover of el-Fasher by armed paramilitary groups.

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to over 30 million people requiring urgent humanitarian assistance, with 12 million individuals displaced. Cooper termed the situation as the most severe humanitarian crisis of the 21st Century, citing spreading famine, widespread diseases like cholera, and shocking atrocities in el-Fasher, including mass executions, starvation, and the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war.

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the urgent need for action to prevent further atrocities, referring to el-Fasher as a crime scene visible even from space. Plans are underway to implement sanctions targeting human rights violations in Sudan. Earlier in April 2024, the Conservative Government sanctioned businesses supporting either the SAF or RSF and froze assets linked to these groups. Efforts are ongoing to negotiate a three-month humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of crucial aid to the conflict-affected region.

Additionally, Cooper criticized the inadequate efforts by Israel in addressing violence by settlers in the West Bank, highlighting the importance of stability in the region for sustainable peace. Following the approval by the UN Security Council for an international stabilisation force in Gaza, Cooper stressed the need for continued momentum. She called for the swift deployment of an international stabilisation force and trained Palestinian police to support the ceasefire and prevent potential exploitation by Hamas, underscoring the urgent establishment of a Palestinian committee for peace initiatives.
