Amazon to Cut 16,000 Jobs Globally

Must read

Amazon, the e-commerce behemoth, has announced intentions to reduce its global workforce by 16,000 employees. While specific details of the cuts remain undisclosed, indications suggest that the impact on the UK workforce may be limited. Sectors such as Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and human resources are reportedly among those likely to be affected.

This recent downsizing follows a previous round of layoffs last October, where Amazon, led by billionaire Jeff Bezos with a net worth of £180 billion, revealed 14,000 job cuts. In a communication to employees, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, empathized with the challenging news, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting affected staff.

Galetti assured that the reduction of approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon would be accompanied by efforts to assist impacted employees. US workers affected by the layoffs will have 90 days to seek internal job opportunities or receive severance pay if no suitable role is secured.

Furthermore, Galetti emphasized Amazon’s ongoing recruitment and investment in critical areas and functions essential for future growth. She clarified that the company does not intend to follow a pattern of frequent broad workforce reductions but will continuously evaluate and adjust strategies to meet evolving customer needs in a rapidly changing environment.

Notably, an internal miscommunication within Amazon’s Web Services division resulted in premature notifications to employees about the planned layoffs. An email and meeting invitation sent by Colleen Aubrey, AWS’s senior vice president of applied AI solutions, erroneously informed employees in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica of job losses before the official announcement, leading to subsequent cancelations and confusion among affected staff members.
