Anthony Joshua made a somber visit to a funeral home to pay his respects to Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele following his release from the hospital. Joshua sustained minor injuries in a recent car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where tragically both of his close friends lost their lives.
The British boxer has been discharged from the Lagos hospital and will now continue his recovery at home in Nigeria. Before returning home, Joshua accompanied his mother to the funeral home where Ghami and Ayodele are resting. Local government officials expressed condolences to the families of the deceased young men and prayed for their souls.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State acknowledged the public support and extended their gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his assistance during this difficult time. They also praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their exceptional care of Joshua and the other injured individuals.
The fatal accident occurred when Joshua’s black SUV collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the tragic loss of his friends. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on locating the truck driver who illegally parked on the highway shoulder. Nigerian authorities confirmed overspeeding and a burst front tire on the SUV contributed to the accident.
Following his hospital discharge, the SUV driver provided a statement to the police. Babatunde Akinbiyi, a representative of Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, highlighted the overspeeding and loss of control that led to the collision with the stationary truck. Excessive speed was a significant factor in the crash.
