A grieving family is seeking explanations for the death of their son, who passed away 25 years after receiving intense medical treatment that ultimately led to his demise.
Named after his father’s passion for Stoke City football club, Collin Junior Lou Macari Stoke City Price died at the age of 27. At just two years old, Collin was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor after showing signs of developmental delays, seizures, and fatigue.
Doctors identified that Collin had a medulloblastoma, a rapidly developing tumor in the cerebellum, a critical area of the brain responsible for movement and coordination.
Although the disease was successfully treated with rigorous surgery and radiation, unforeseen consequences emerged over two decades later. Collin was admitted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital on January 10, 2024, after experiencing seizures, and scans revealed the presence of another brain tumor.
The medical experts confirmed that Collin had developed a glioblastoma due to the radiation treatment he received as a child. Despite efforts, the second tumor was incurable, leading to Collin’s passing at Douglas Macmillan Hospice in Longport on June 22.
The family contends that Collin’s death could have been averted, suggesting that the repetitive annual CT scans he underwent exposed him to unnecessary radiation. They believe that early detection might have prolonged Collin’s life and improved his quality of life.
Dr. Adam Fullagar, a clinical oncologist at the Royal Stoke, indicated that the childhood radiation treatment for medulloblastoma likely caused the development of the second tumor. He mentioned that while spotting the disease earlier might not have altered the outcome due to the aggressive nature of glioblastomas, he would not have recommended the annual CT scans.
Coroner Andrew Barkley acknowledged the challenges faced by the medical team and supported their decisions, concluding that Collin’s death resulted from the complications of essential medical treatment.
Paying tribute to her beloved son, Zoe Phillips described Collin as a vibrant and humorous individual who brightened every room he entered. She fondly remembers his cheerful nature, humor, and unwavering helpfulness despite his health struggles. The family continues to cherish his memory daily.
