Must read

Keir Starmer is set to engage with Members of Parliament during Prime Minister’s Questions, a week ahead of Rachel Reeves presenting her crucial Budget.

During the session, the Prime Minister clashed with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, who brought up concerns regarding the Government’s Budget tax proposals. This exchange followed Rachel Reeves’ decision to abandon a proposed income tax increase in the upcoming Budget.

Badenoch criticized the government for seeming to make decisions on the fly, labeling them the “Government of guesswork.” In response, Starmer vehemently accused the Tories of aiming to revert to “Austerity 2.0,” asserting a need to move forward from past policies.

Starmer emphasized that the Budget details will be outlined by the Government next week, expressing disappointment in the Tories’ apparent lack of reflection on past errors. He criticized their approach as a return to a failed strategy.

In a separate exchange, Lib Dem MP Josh Babarinde recounted a distressing incident where a constituent’s bank mistakenly processed a £125,000 cheque as £125. He urged the PM to consider imposing a windfall tax on banks to aid struggling residents.

The PM acknowledged the severity of the situation and requested detailed information for further review. Additionally, Starmer extended warm wishes to Babarinde on his recent engagement, highlighting the personal aspect of the parliamentary interactions.

The session also saw lively exchanges, including Reform UK MP Lee Anderson accusing the Labour frontbench of engaging in divisive politics. Starmer responded by criticizing Nigel Farage’s previous performance at PMQs.

Other topics discussed included a proposal for a smartphone ban in schools, mental health challenges shared by MPs, the asylum system, gambling regulations, and legislative scrutiny in the House of Lords.

Overall, the PMQs session highlighted various policy debates and personal anecdotes, showcasing a range of concerns and perspectives among Members of Parliament.
