Must read

An individual passionate about football, who managed to raise more than £260,000 for charity by selling samosas. A mother who bravely plunged into the sea to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. Additionally, a five-year-old girl who exhibited remarkable courage in rebuilding her life after losing both legs.

These remarkable individuals were among the winners celebrated at the prestigious 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these everyday heroes were recognized at a dazzling ceremony in London, co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.

The event took an unexpected turn when P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor for the Pride of Britain Awards, surprised each of the 12 winners with a cruise holiday – offering them a chance to create unforgettable memories with their families.

We caught up with three of the heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard Britannia, exploring eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-tier entertainment.

Aiyla Mota, Young Braveheart

Shortly before her fourth birthday, Aiyla Mota fell ill with what initially seemed like a common childhood infection. However, it quickly escalated into sepsis, leading to multiple organ failure and necessitating the amputation of both her legs and five fingers to save her life.

Now five years old, Aiyla has made an incredible recovery. Her resilience and optimism have astounded those around her, earning her a Pride of Britain Award and making her one of the youngest recipients ever.

Her mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, proudly states, “Aiyla has always exuded a lively personality, and despite her challenges, she has not lost her spark. In fact, she is now even more confident, vibrant, and exuberant. She’s like Aiyla multiplied by 100!

“My grandmother believes it’s as if Aiyla recognizes she has been given a second chance at life and is seizing it to the fullest.”

Following the presentation of her award by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean adventure, accompanied by her grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They relished exploring Britannia’s 27 restaurants and bars, eight live entertainment venues, and four swimming pools.

“The cruise was an extraordinary vacation, and I am immensely thankful to P&O Cruises for this incredible opportunity,” expresses Eulanda. “It was our maiden cruise experience, and we were unsure of what to anticipate.

“One surprising aspect was how, at times, you forgot you were on a ship due to the plethora of activities available.

“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, the entertainment, and the late-night activities! During our island visits, she adored the beaches and a rainforest excursion.

“For me, the visit to Barbados held special significance. It is where my ancestors originated from, although I had never visited before. Stepping on its shores, I felt immensely blessed and connected to my roots.”
