Intoxicated Man Fatally Hits Girlfriend’s Brother with Car

Must read

A man consumed Jägerbombs before fatally striking his girlfriend’s brother with a car in a Liverpool neighborhood shortly after meeting him for the first time, a court revealed.

Stephen Bates, residing on Herondale Road in Mossley Hill, is facing trial at Liverpool Crown Court on charges of murdering 47-year-old Martin O’Donovan. The tragic incident occurred outside Martin’s sister’s residence on Stonyhurst Road in Woolton during their mother’s 70th birthday celebration in April.

The two individuals had just been introduced earlier that day when Bates allegedly engaged in an intoxicated altercation and made threats to harm Martin. Witnesses reported that Bates left the gathering but returned later in his Ford Fiesta, intentionally aiming the vehicle at Martin, resulting in severe head injuries.

During a police interview at the scene, Bates admitted his wrongdoing by stating, “I know what I’ve done, I’ve messed up.” A pre-recorded statement by Susanne Lewzey, Bates’ girlfriend and Martin’s sister, was presented to the authorities the following day.

Lewzey recounted the events of the party, mentioning the jovial atmosphere at the beginning. However, she observed Bates becoming excessively inebriated, a behavior she had not witnessed in their 19-month relationship. She tried to calm him down, but he grew agitated and insistent on driving. Despite her efforts to prevent him, Bates eventually drove off, leading to the tragic incident.

The situation escalated when Bates directed Martin’s sister, Natalie O’Donovan, to a nearby street before driving off without her. Shortly after, the horrifying incident unfolded, with Martin being struck by Bates’ car. Lewzey described the chaotic scene where she had to intervene to stop Bates from causing further harm.

The emotional turmoil continued as family members rushed to help Martin, who was in critical condition under the vehicle. Lewzey’s detailed account shed light on the tragic events leading up to the fatal incident.

Bates is being represented by legal counsel as he faces trial, maintaining his innocence of murder but admitting guilt to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The court proceedings, overseen by Judge Neil Flewitt KC, are ongoing as the case unfolds.

This tragic event has left a devastating impact on the families involved, highlighting the consequences of reckless actions fueled by intoxication.
