Must read

Heineken, a major beer company, has revealed its intention to cut around 6,000 jobs due to declining beer demand and tough market conditions. The reduction in workforce, affecting up to 7% of its global employees, will involve eliminating 5,000 to 6,000 positions over the next two years.

In the UK, Heineken’s subsidiary, with offices in Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Tadcaster, Hereford, and Ledbury, employs approximately 2,100 individuals. Additionally, the company’s Star Pubs and Bars division runs 2,400 establishments across the UK. The specific impact on the UK operations has not been disclosed by the Dutch brewer.

In other news, mobile and broadband customers will now be informed in clear monetary terms about any mid-contract price increases, as providers are prohibited from linking these adjustments to inflation. However, concerns have been raised by consumer advocates, including Martin Lewis, about certain firms not adhering to the rules and implementing larger price hikes than originally communicated.

Furthermore, new safeguards introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority aim to enhance protection for consumers using buy now pay later (BNPL) services, addressing worries about potential financial strain and debt issues. Lenders are now required to conduct affordability checks before offering BNPL options, with a focus on providing transparent information on repayment schedules and consequences of missed payments.

Aldi, the discount supermarket chain, is set to invest over £300 million in upgrading and expanding its UK stores this year, in addition to a previous commitment of £370 million to open 40 new outlets by 2026. The enhancements will include store extensions and energy-efficient measures such as the installation of fridge doors to reduce energy consumption.

As families face increased expenses during the upcoming school holidays, choosing cost-effective activities like free-entry museums and taking advantage of special offers at restaurants such as Bella Italia can help manage budgets. The restaurant chain is offering a Kids Eat Free promotion, allowing children aged two to 11 to enjoy a complimentary full meal with the purchase of an adult main course during the half-term period.
