Explaining the risks, UK internet provider Virgin Media emphasized, “Although we rigorously test our Hubs at various temperatures, they are better off shielded from bright sunlight, just like your phone or laptop. If the Hub overheats, it could slow down your connection or even cease functioning.”
A warm room alone is unlikely to cause issues, as most modern routers are designed to handle typical summer temperatures. However, placing the router on a windowsill or in direct sunlight can push it beyond its operational limits. Consider it akin to your own body seeking shade when your skin starts to burn.
When the router overheats, broadband speeds may drop, and the router could temporarily shut down until it cools off.
Relocating the router away from sunlight is the initial step, but placement is crucial in other aspects as well. While keeping the router hidden in a cabinet may seem neat, poor ventilation can hamper Wi-Fi performance.
Virgin Media also recommended, “Proper placement of the Hub can enhance Wi-Fi coverage. Avoid placing the Hub in a cupboard or behind your TV.”
For optimal connectivity, position your router in an open area, preferably elevated off the ground and centrally located in your home. Additionally, keep it away from potential interference sources like cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.
Another factor to avoid is situating your router near a fish tank, as water can disrupt Wi-Fi signals, hindering connectivity throughout your home.
