“Mexico Enforces Vaping Ban: Tourists Face Fines and Detainment”

Must read

Mexico has long been a favored destination for travelers seeking winter warmth due to its sunny, comfortable, and dry climate between November and April. However, British tourists heading to Mexico need to be cautious about strict new regulations regarding vaping.

Vaping in public spaces is now illegal in Mexico, with on-the-spot fines being imposed. Furthermore, a recent prohibition on importing electronic cigarettes means that travelers entering Mexico by land or sea with vaping devices could potentially face imprisonment.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo introduced a constitutional reform on January 16, banning the importation, sale, and distribution of vaping products. This law, effective immediately, extends to all activities related to electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, as well as the production and distribution of illicit substances.

It is crucial for tourists to understand that they are not exempt from these rules. Custom officials in popular tourist spots like Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, and Cozumel are rigorously enforcing the vaping ban.

The British government strongly advises against bringing vaping devices to Mexico, as customs officials can confiscate these items and impose fines or detain individuals. The ban applies to all types of vaping devices, including disposables, refillable models, pods, and non-nicotine devices, affecting travelers arriving by air or sea.

Reports suggest that violators of the vaping ban could face severe penalties, including confiscation of devices, fines up to $12,500, and possible detainment or imprisonment for up to eight years. One traveler shared their experience of being detained and given the choice of jail or a substantial fine for possessing a vape in Mexico shortly after the law was enacted.

Other countries, such as India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, Qatar, and Vietnam, have also implemented strict laws and bans on vaping. As of last year, approximately 5.6 million Brits were vapers, comprising around 11% of the population, surpassing traditional tobacco smokers in the UK for the first time.
