In the realm of my duties, there are occasions that carry a sense of formality. They seem like part of the usual order, prearranged, and procedural.
Yet, as I stand before the assembly today to recite the names of every woman believed to have fallen victim to male violence in the last year, the ceremonial aspect of my role fades away.
Reciting these names annually sheds light on the harsh reality that women face daily, both in this nation and across the globe. This day remains perpetually challenging. It underscores the significant responsibility I bear.
Each name represents a stark reminder of the collective letdown by our Parliament, institutions, and society in safeguarding women from harm.
Today, I rise not only as a Minister and Member of Parliament but also as one of a historic 265 female MPs, uniting to observe International Women’s Day.
It brings to mind the remarkable accomplishments of women worldwide in social, cultural, academic, and political arenas.
This is precisely why I have chosen this day – how can we celebrate women globally without acknowledging the struggles of so many?
This harsh reality may be uncomfortable for some to confront. However, using this day merely for self-congratulation while women face violence is not progress; it is a charade.
This moment holds immense significance for me, not just as an opportunity to pay tribute to lives tragically cut short but as a reflection of our national identity and our chosen priorities for safety. But this moment does not belong to me.
It belongs to these women, as well as all women and girls living under threats, abuse, and harassment, often paying with their lives. Undoubtedly, this is the most challenging day of the year.
My voice trembles, tears are held back, and the weight of the day’s emotions can be overwhelming.
Regardless of the discomfort and gravity of the moment, I will persist in honoring women in this manner. The fight must continue to ensure women and girls feel secure in their homes, on the streets, and in their workplaces.
Hence, we are mobilizing the full force of the state to halve violence against women and girls within a decade. This is not merely another governmental policy; it is a vital support system.
By placing the protection of women and girls at the core of our actions, we truly honor these women. And I will not rest there.
I am committed to taking all necessary measures to make this country a safe place for women and girls.
