Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn provided an update on her condition following her third surgery post a tragic accident that shattered her Olympic aspirations at Milan-Cortina. Vonn, aged 41, sustained a severe leg injury at the Milan Cortina Games, necessitating immediate medical attention after a harrowing crash shortly after tearing her ACL.
During the women’s downhill event, Team USA’s Vonn collided with a gate, losing balance and tumbling down the slope just 13 seconds into her run. After initial treatment on-site, she was airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further care.
Taking to Instagram, Vonn shared, “I underwent my third surgery today, which was successful. Success now holds a different significance than it did a few days back. Although progress is gradual, I am optimistic about my recovery. Grateful for the exceptional medical team, supportive friends, family, and the overwhelming love and encouragement from people worldwide.”
Acknowledging her teammates and fellow Team USA athletes for their inspiring performances, Vonn faces a prolonged recovery period following multiple surgeries to mend her leg. Despite the challenges, there is hope for her to return to skiing within a year.
Notably, skier Federica Brignone, who endured significant leg injuries at the 2025 Italian Championships, made a remarkable comeback within 10 months, competing alongside Vonn at Cortina’s Olympia course.
Discussing Vonn’s prognosis, Andrea Panzeri, the head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, highlighted the complexity of Vonn’s fracture but noted Brignone’s successful recovery from a similar injury.
Orthopedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna emphasized that while Vonn possesses exceptional physical attributes, age could influence the pace of her recuperation. The potential development of arthritis and its impact on joint function and mobility are concerns, particularly considering Vonn’s history of leg injuries and a previous knee implant.
As Vonn navigates her recovery journey, the support from fans and well-wishers remains crucial, offering hope and motivation for her eventual return to competitive skiing.
