An individual claiming to be Madeleine McCann expressed to a court her lack of surprise at the police’s inability to locate the missing girl. Julia Wandelt, a 24-year-old Polish national from Lubin, accused the authorities of misleading the McCann family regarding Madeleine’s case. Wandelt, who is accused of stalking Kate and Gerry McCann through emails, calls, and visits, shared her sympathy for the family during her testimony at Leicester Crown Court.
Despite being imprisoned for eight months, Wandelt expressed understanding for the McCanns’ ongoing search for their daughter, stating that her own quest to find her parents has been a challenging journey. She emphasized that she harbors no ill will towards the McCanns and has consistently defended them. Wandelt also criticized the police, claiming they are disinterested in locating Madeleine and suggesting that the McCanns were misguided by law enforcement.
During the trial, Wandelt emotionally recounted her interactions with Amelie McCann and the distressing memories of her childhood, which she described as three years of torment without clarity on her identity. She detailed her efforts to seek help from various authorities and organizations before reaching out to the McCanns directly.
Wandelt disclosed receiving hostile reactions, including threats on her life, due to her claims. She revealed a troubled childhood marked by abuse, leading to self-harm and suicide attempts. Wandelt linked her belief of being Madeleine to similarities between a suspect in the case and her abuser, emphasizing her need for closure and self-discovery.
She admitted to confronting her parents about undergoing a DNA test to confirm her identity, a request they declined, leaving her with continued uncertainty. Wandelt questioned why she was swiftly excluded from the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance despite presenting compelling reasons for her belief.
Wandelt and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg, both pleaded not guilty to a charge of stalking between June 2022 and February this year. The court will resume Wandelt’s testimony on Tuesday.
