In a tragic incident, a man lost his life outside his residence due to an unfortunate accident involving a dog inside a van. James Campbell was assisting his wife in maneuvering their vehicle onto their driveway when the incident occurred.
The 68-year-old resident of Cantonment in Tampa, Florida, met his untimely demise in January 2013 as a result of an unexpected turn of events caused by their pet dog. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that while attempting to reverse their 1995 Chevrolet van into the driveway, Mr. Campbell left his door open as he went to open the driveway gates, leaving his wife, Iris Fortner, behind the wheel.
The family pet, spotting its owners, leaped into the driver’s side of the van in excitement, accidentally activating the accelerator pedal. In a split second, the van accelerated in reverse, tragically running over Mr. Campbell.
Despite his wife’s frantic efforts to stop the vehicle, it was too late, and Mr. Campbell was fatally injured. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Mrs. Campbell sustained minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital for treatment.
No legal charges were filed following the incident. However, the combination of a running engine, a loose dog, and a vehicle in gear proved to be a perilous mix of circumstances.
In a strange coincidence, another unusual dog-related incident took place in the same vicinity that month. A naked intruder was discovered trying to harm a pet Rottweiler, only to be subdued by the homeowners with gunfire.
In Miami, during the early hours of January 2013, residents were alerted by their dog’s aggressive barking. Upon investigation, they found a nude individual attempting to harm one of their dogs. The homeowner intervened, shooting the intruder in the leg and detaining him until law enforcement arrived.
According to Miami Police Department spokesperson Willie Moreno, the homeowner’s actions were deemed justified given the naked intruder’s irrational behavior and assault on the dog and the homeowner.
