Britons are being advised to double-check their passports following data showing that more than 1.4 million UK adults might face expiration before the upcoming summer vacations.
The team at economical airline Wizz Air conducted a study using information from the HM Passport Office, revealing that over 1.4 million documents are set to expire by the end of June 2026. Failing to verify their passports could lead to travelers encountering obstacles even before the commencement of their holiday.
An invalid passport not only results in denial of boarding at the airport but also renders travel insurance ineffective, as claims are unlikely to be covered if traveling with an expired document, consequently annulling the policy for that trip.
As the summer holidays approach, Wizz Air is strongly encouraging travelers to confirm their passport validity now to avoid potential last-minute stress or trip cancellations during the peak season.
For UK citizens traveling to Europe, a post-Brexit regulation continues to surprise holidaymakers. It is essential to check two dates on your passport: the issue date and the expiry date. Passports must be issued less than 10 years before entering a country and be valid for at least three months beyond the return date from EU countries or six months for some non-EU destinations.
In case of uncertainty about entry requirements for a destination, UK passport holders can refer to the Foreign Office’s travel advice for updated information.
Yvonne Moynihan, the Managing Director at Wizz Air UK, emphasized the importance of verifying passport validity to avoid disruptions and enjoy a variety of destinations across their network during the peak booking season.
Renewing an expired passport is a simple process, costing £94.50 for online renewal or £107 for a paper application. It is necessary to provide both the old passport and any valid passports from other countries, either as color photocopies or the physical passport. Additional details can be found at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport.
A reminder to update passport details on existing bookings if necessary, especially for those who have already scheduled a trip.
