“Tibetan Influencer Tragically Killed by Ex-Husband on Livestream”

Must read

Influencer Lhamo, known for her positive content on outdoor activities and cooking, tragically met a horrific fate one evening in September 2020. While live-streaming from her father’s kitchen to over 400 viewers on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, Lhamo was attacked by her violent ex-husband, Tang Lu. Tang, who had a history of abusing Lhamo, violently set her on fire after barging into the room during the livestream.

Despite her father rushing her to the hospital and her sister Dolma’s desperate attempts to save her, Lhamo suffered severe burns covering 90% of her body. She fought for her life in the intensive care unit for two weeks but succumbed to her injuries. Tang was arrested, found guilty of homicide, sentenced to death, and eventually executed in 2022.

Lhamo, a Tibetan influencer living in Jinchuan, Sichuan, had been enduring abuse from Tang for years, resulting in physical injuries and emotional trauma. Despite reporting the abuse to the authorities, little action was taken to protect her. The tragic incident raised awareness about domestic violence in China, leading to the #LhamoAct movement advocating for better laws and support for abuse survivors.

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need to protect women’s rights nationally, referencing Lhamo and other victims in a powerful feminist song by singer Tan Weiwei. The story of Lhamo serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing domestic abuse and providing support to victims in need.
