An individual of Afghan nationality has been identified as the alleged perpetrator following the shooting of two US National Guard members in close proximity to the White House, as reported by various sources. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, arrived in the United States in 2021.
As per the NY Post, Lakanwal purportedly lay in wait before attacking near the Farragut West Metro Station in Northwest DC around 2:15 pm, firing at a female guard, hitting her in the chest and head, based on information from law enforcement sources.
The two guards were on duty during the targeted assault, both sustaining critical injuries and receiving treatment in the hospital according to FBI director Kash Patel.
Reportedly, the suspect was shot four times while being transported in an ambulance, nearly unclothed, stated AP. Authorities were still in the process of verifying his background.
Jeffrey Carroll, an executive assistant DC police chief, disclosed that investigators lacked any motive information. He mentioned that the assailant immediately began shooting at the troops upon turning the corner, as observed in videos reviewed by investigators.
Ms. Bowser stated, “This was a targeted shooting.”
Initially, West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey declared the troops deceased, later citing conflicting reports on their condition. A suspect in custody had also been shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries, as per a law enforcement source.
Following the incident, the Trump administration swiftly deployed an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that President Donald Trump requested the deployment of extra troops.
The shooting occurred approximately two blocks northwest of the White House near a metro station. Responding to the gunfire, nearby troops restrained the gunman after he was shot, as mentioned by Mr. Carroll.
“It appears to be a lone gunman who brandished a firearm and ambushed these National Guard members. Presently, we have no other suspects,” Mr. Carroll stated during a news briefing.
Another law enforcement officer noted that at least one of the Guard members exchanged gunfire with the assailant.
While in Florida for Thanksgiving, Mr. Trump cautioned on social media that the individual who shot the guard members would face severe consequences. He expressed support for the National Guard, Military, and Law Enforcement, emphasizing their significance.
