Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw revealed on Thursday that she declined a directing opportunity for an upcoming television series based on the Harry Potter franchise, citing her stance against supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a text conversation on Instagram where she emphatically rejected the offer to work on the forthcoming HBO show.
Expressing her firm stance, Pankiw stated in the post, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” She clarified that the offer was for a directing role, not acting. Pankiw, aged 39, is known for directing episodes of Black Mirror and the entire first season of Feel Good, as well as the 2023 film I Used to be Funny.
Although the exchange was dated April 21, the recipient of Pankiw’s message was not disclosed in the post. The new Harry Potter series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. The show, based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series, will be available for streaming on Crave in Canada.
J.K. Rowling, the British author behind the Harry Potter series, has faced criticism for her controversial views on transgender issues. Rowling’s public statements, including her support for individuals skeptical of gender fluidity, have sparked debates and backlash within the Harry Potter community and beyond.
In a separate incident, director Kate Herron also shared her decision to decline involvement in the Harry Potter series, echoing Pankiw’s sentiments. Herron, known for her work on Loki and other popular series, commended Pankiw’s stance on social media.
While Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, has not responded to inquiries regarding the refusals from Pankiw and Herron, the filmmakers have stood by their choices. Additional details on the text exchange and comments from Pankiw’s representative are pending response.
The controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling’s views have created divisions within the Harry Potter franchise, with various individuals and entities distancing themselves from the author’s statements. Rowling’s spokesperson declined to provide comments on the matter.
