University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize recipient, has achieved an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a playful spoof of the prestigious Nobel Prizes, recognize unconventional and innovative research within academia.
Thurairajah and his team secured the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a “splash-free urinal.” Upon receiving the news from his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah expressed his delight and celebrated with wine in espresso cups.
Their research involved creating various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to minimize splashing and enhance cleanliness. The Nautilus design was deemed superior for its reduced splash and ease of maintenance compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues, sporting bright yellow raincoats, were prepared for recognition among their eccentric peers. Despite the whimsical nature of their project, Thurairajah highlighted the practical importance of improving public restroom facilities for societal benefit.
In addition to the urinal research, Canadian teams were acknowledged for diverse studies, including the University of Toronto’s investigation into unethical behavior related to candy consumption and McGill University’s innovation using mosquito proboscises for 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns. Thurairajah emphasized the global nature of the scientific community and the importance of international collaboration in academic endeavors.
