Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, sprung a surprise by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who topped the league, with a 4-3 victory in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead with Kahli Johnson’s goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just as the first half was about to end.
Just before halftime, Thurton struck again to secure her brace, setting the Wild on course for the win.
Jorian Baucom also added a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score on a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who saw their record slip to 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The Ottawa team also saw their unbeaten streak of 10 matches come to an end.
Despite controlling possession for 54% of the game, the Rapid were outshot 16-13, with the Wild having more shots on target at 9-6.
The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then added a crucial second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, propelling the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the fourth-place Tides in the lead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, occupying fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the visitors 18-13, with a 6-4 shots-on-target advantage.
The Tides managed to earn four of the six corners awarded in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
