Aldi has regained its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK, according to recent research by consumer group Which? Their study compared the prices of a set list of 70 items at various supermarkets.
Aldi came out on top with an average cost of £121.22 for the 70-item list, narrowly beating Lidl, which was named the cheapest supermarket the previous month with an average cost of £122.35. Tesco, on the other hand, was pricier, but Clubcard members managed to save an average of £2.55, bringing their total to £133.65.
In contrast, Waitrose was found to be the most expensive option, with an average total of £166.79 for the same set of items. This significant price difference means that families opting to shop at Aldi or Waitrose could potentially save over £45.
The comparison conducted by Which? evaluates the prices of eight different supermarket chains each month, based on a selection of groceries that includes both own-label products and popular branded items like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread.
In a separate analysis of a larger list of 183 groceries, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their limited range of branded products, Asda emerged as the most cost-effective choice, with an average total of £455.52 in the previous month. Asda’s commitment to reducing prices to compete with other supermarkets, including discounters, has been evident.
Waitrose, on the other hand, maintained its position as the most expensive supermarket for the larger shopping list, with an average cost of £522.91, significantly higher than Asda. This trend was consistent even for the smaller list of items, where Waitrose’s average cost of £166.79 was 38% higher than Aldi’s.
Reena Sewraz, the retail editor at Which?, highlighted the ongoing competition between discounters like Aldi and Lidl, emphasizing that consumers can benefit from the competitive pricing strategies. With the holiday season approaching, food prices are a concern for many households, making it crucial to compare prices across supermarkets to save up to 27% on grocery bills.
