“Attitude Shift: Spaniards Embrace British Tourists”

Must read

A recent study shows a notable shift in attitudes among Spaniards towards British tourists, with a significant decrease in anti-tourism sentiments compared to the previous year. Previously, there were instances of confrontations, including locals spraying tourists with water guns and engaging in heated disputes on beaches in Spain, Mallorca, and the Canary Islands.

However, findings from On the Beach, a holiday company, reveal that nearly 80% of the surveyed residents now welcome UK visitors, indicating a substantial change in perception. Only a small minority, around seven percent, still express opposition towards British holidaymakers.

The research highlights the concerns of many residents regarding the impact of reduced tourism on local businesses, which significantly contribute to the Spanish economy. Nearly half of the respondents fear that the recent demonstrations have harmed establishments such as pubs, hotels, and shops, with 85% acknowledging the country’s heavy reliance on tourism for economic stability.

Zoe Harris from On the Beach emphasized the importance of tourists to the Spanish economy, stating that the majority of Spaniards are supportive of visitors. She mentioned that the protests were aimed more at the authorities than at holidaymakers, clarifying that communities in Spain and the Canary Islands are eager to welcome British tourists.

Despite Spain’s enduring popularity as a vacation spot, recent data shows that Turkey has surpassed the Canary Islands as the preferred destination for UK travelers. Concerns arise among tourism officials that the negative demonstrations targeting tourists could have severe repercussions on the country’s lucrative travel industry, estimated at £100bn annually.

Incidents last summer included locals disrupting tourists’ activities, such as dining in restaurants or sunbathing on beaches, with actions like spraying water pistols and chanting anti-tourism slogans. Jorge Marichal, head of the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation, criticized the protesters for their actions, describing them as lacking intelligence.
