“Connected devices causing slow broadband speeds”

Must read

Many households may experience slow broadband speeds due to the sheer number of connected devices in their homes. Recent findings from Uswitch reveal that the average British residence harbors around 16 web-enabled gadgets. Devices like video doorbells, continuously transmitting data, can bog down internet performance, affecting activities such as video calls and streaming services like Netflix, especially in homes with basic internet setups.

Broadband can be likened to a road – the more traffic it accommodates, the slower it becomes. While full-fiber connections offer wider bandwidth for increased traffic, traditional copper cables may struggle to keep up. Additionally, dormant devices, termed ‘phantom’ devices, can remain connected to the network, consuming bandwidth by constantly exchanging data with the router.

To enhance connectivity, consider upgrading to faster full-fiber speeds if your home is saturated with smart devices. Disconnecting unused gadgets can also lead to immediate speed improvements. Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, advises conducting a digital spring clean to remove idle devices that may be draining bandwidth needlessly. Managing connected devices and regulating simultaneous high-definition video streaming can significantly enhance internet performance, even without a full-fiber connection.
