All EE customers are on high alert due to a resurgence of a convincing text message scam in recent weeks. The scam prompts recipients to claim their supposed “EE reward points” urgently before expiry by clicking a link to a fake EE website. This scam aims to deceive individuals into providing personal information and money under false pretenses. Reports indicate a rise in such incidents this month.
A number of EE users have taken to online forums to caution others. One user shared, “I received a text about my rewards this morning. I clicked on the link, and it appeared to be a legitimate EE website. Please be cautious.”
Another user admitted, “I fell for a scam text regarding EE points rewards and entered my phone number in a moment of carelessness. I realized it was a scam and exited the site immediately.”
Phonely, a cybersecurity firm, has observed an increase in reports on its scam-tracking platform, “Who Called Me,” indicating that fraudulent messages posing as EE are being sent from random numbers.
Phonely advises all mobile users to exercise vigilance when receiving unexpected messages related to rewards, prizes, or expiring benefits.
According to Bryn Thompson, Phonely’s Marketing Director, these scam texts are crafted to appear highly authentic and can catch people off guard easily. Thompson emphasized the importance of avoiding clicking on links in unsolicited texts and recommended contacting mobile providers directly using official contact information if uncertain.
EE has clarified that it does not operate a points or rewards program and has provided an example of the fraudulent message to help customers identify it.
EE issued a warning stating, “If you receive a message like this, disregard it and refrain from clicking any embedded links.”
The fraudulent text message states:
“The EE points program reminds you: As a valued user, we are offering you points as a gift. These points will expire in three working days. Click the link below to redeem prizes with your points!”
EE emphasized, “This message is not genuine. To safeguard your information, avoid clicking on unknown text message links, refrain from responding, calling the provided number, or sharing personal or financial details.”
Therefore, the advice is clear: if you receive a message from EE regarding reward points, refrain from clicking on any links or disclosing personal information.
