Elderly Woman Acquitted of Murder in Frail Man’s Death

Must read

A woman who targeted vulnerable elderly individuals, leading to the death of a frail 97-year-old man in his home, has been acquitted of murder. Tandy Swinton, 44, was found not guilty of murdering William Lambie but was convicted of culpable homicide after assaulting the man and causing fatal injuries. The incident occurred at his residence in Dryburgh Gardens, Dundee, on April 15 last year.

Following the assault, Mr. Lambie underwent surgery at Ninewells Hospital and was later transferred for rehabilitation. Despite receiving care at a nursing home for end-of-life treatment, he passed away on May 26. Swinton faced trial at the High Court in Edinburgh and was found guilty by the jury for causing Mr. Lambie’s death.

Defense solicitor advocate Iain Paterson KC stated that Swinton would receive a significant prison sentence in light of the verdict. It was revealed that Swinton had a history of 26 prior convictions, including offenses related to drugs, theft, shoplifting, breaking bail conditions, breaching anti-social behavior laws, assault, and robbery.

Swinton had previously targeted Mr. Lambie, threatening him with a knife and stealing money from him in a separate incident in 2020. She had also coerced another elderly resident, Margaret Chalmers, to withdraw money from a bank for her in 2022, resulting in a three-year prison sentence.

During the trial, friends of Mr. Lambie shared fond memories of him, describing him as a dedicated Christian who inspired others in the Jehovah’s Witnesses community in Dundee. They highlighted his enjoyment of simple pleasures like visiting Greggs for a sausage roll and a cappuccino with friends.

The judge, Lord Harrower, acknowledged the pain felt by Mr. Lambie’s loved ones and noted Swinton’s escalating criminal behavior. The case was adjourned for a background report on Swinton, who remains in custody awaiting sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow later this year.
