Father Abandons Baby, Faces Charges in Tragic Suffocation

Must read

A father left his three-month-old daughter in a baby swing, leading to her suffocation, as he traveled over 200 miles away for an astonishing reason. Jacob Vera, 26, was responsible for caring for his two children while their mother, Jessica Brown, was at work. Instead of attending to them, Vera left the children unattended. Upon Brown’s return, she found her 16-month-old child crying in a mobile crib and her infant daughter, Isabella, wrapped in a blanket and rocking in a baby swing.

Concerned when she noticed that Isabella was not moving normally or breathing, Brown sought help. However, Vera had left with their only phone, delaying assistance. Muncie Police Department officers responded to the Bestway Inn around 8:30 pm on March 25, 2023, following Brown’s distress call. She had left Vera in charge at 2 pm, returning to find one child upset and Isabella in the swing.

Vera admitted to leaving the children unattended to travel to Illinois to avoid conflict with Brown. Medical responders discovered signs of rigor mortis in Isabella, indicating she had passed away approximately two hours before their arrival. A coroner confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation.

Described as a joyful and loving child with captivating eyes and a radiant smile, Isabella’s untimely death deeply saddened her loved ones. In memory of Isabella, the family urged others to cherish their children, express love and appreciation, and ensure their safety.

Witnesses reported Vera’s attempts to travel to Illinois, with one individual providing him a ride for a fee. Vera acknowledged leaving the children unattended and expressed remorse for his actions. He pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily harm in relation to Isabella’s death and faces a potential sentence of nine years in prison.
