Millions of Gmail users are set to have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google had previously indicated that this feature was in the works, and now it seems to be rolling out globally. In an update on its Gmail blog page, Google has officially stated that users can switch their Google Account email ending with gmail.com to a different address also ending with gmail.com.
This update could be well-received, particularly for those who want to alter their username or have experienced changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized an ‘important’ point about this new capability.
Google clarified that the ability to modify your Google Account email address is being gradually introduced to all users, so it may not be immediately available to everyone. The tech giant from the US added this cautionary note.
So how does the process operate?
The new system enables both the old and new email addresses to coexist, ensuring that any emails sent to the current Gmail address will automatically be forwarded to the new one. Google has assured users that none of their account data will be impacted, and all photos, messages, and emails associated with the original address will remain unchanged.
If you are interested in checking if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing your emails, here’s how to do so:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if required.
– Click on Personal info located in the top-left corner.
– Choose Email, then Google Account email.
– Click on Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is not visible, it may not be available to you yet.
– Enter the new username you wish to use, ensuring it is not currently in use or previously used and deleted.
– Click on Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Proceed with the on-screen instructions.
Upon completion, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will be retained as an alternate email.
