“Iconic UK Shoe Retailer to Close Worcester Store After 153 Years”

Must read

One of the UK’s longest-standing shoe retailers is set to close its high street store in Worcester after providing service for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026. However, the brand’s other outlets in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operating as usual.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business, citing financial viability issues as the primary reason. She lamented the challenging decision, stating that sustaining the Worcester store was no longer feasible for the future. Elt emphasized the impossibility of generating funds out of thin air.

Worcester City Council’s spokesperson acknowledged the impact of online shopping on city centers like Worcester, leading to a shift towards leisure and entertainment-focused town centers. The council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has undertaken extensive efforts to support local traders. Worcester boasts a distinct shopping environment blending popular high street brands with unique independent retailers, with the council actively promoting this model.

Notably, Scope, a charity shop chain, recently closed three high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington as part of its plan to shut down 77 shops this year due to projected financial losses. Scope’s head of retail, Debbie Boylen, expressed regret over the closures, highlighting the crucial role their shops played in raising essential funds to support disabled individuals and their families. The charity’s decision to close specific outlets followed consultations with staff and volunteers impacted by the changes.
