Rebekah Vardy has returned to court in the latest Wagatha Christie case. Vardy’s legal team has claimed that Coleen Rooney ’s lawyers committed misconduct by “very substantially” understating some of her legal costs.
Vardy unsuccessfully sued Rooney for libel back in 2022 and there was a further dispute about how much legal costs Vardy should pay. At the time, Vardy was ordered to pay 90 per cent of Mrs Rooney’s claimed legal bill, which sat at £1,833,906.89.
As part of the ruling, Vardy was also told to pay an initial payment of £800,000, which was included in the total sum. Vardy’s lawyers accused Rooney’s lawyers of committing misconduct by understating the costs but a judge found no misconduct had been committed. Vardy’s team appealed against the decision, which is why they are now back in court.
In written submissions for a hearing, which was held on Monday, Jamie Carpenter KC, said: “At all times throughout the costs budgeting process, Mrs Rooney concealed from Mrs Vardy and the court that the incurred costs in her precedents H were much less than her true incurred costs. Although the costs judge was critical of Mrs Rooney’s lawyers for their lack of transparency, he held ‘on balance’ and ‘only just’ that there was no misconduct. It is respectfully submitted that he was wrong to do so.”
Robin Dunne, representing Mrs Rooney at the previous hearing, said the argument that the amount owed should be reduced was “misconceived” and that the budget was “not designed to be an accurate or binding representation” of her overall legal costs.
Jamie Vardy’s true feelings about Rebekah continuing her battle with Coleen has now been revealed. Speaking last November, she said of her husband’s reaction to her speaking out: “Everyone thinks Jamie is mad at me for speaking out, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s encouraging me, saying, ‘Give it to her, get the truth out there’.
“He loves it that she’s back getting headlines. The more stick he gets from the stands in football, the better he plays.”
Earlier this year, it was claimed that Jamie earned a whopping £7,280,000 as an attacker for Leicester City, the most of the whole team, followed by Odsonne Edouard (£4.68m), Harry Winks (£4.68m) and Boubakary Soumare (£4.16m).
Elsewhere, Coleen previously opened up about her own feelings towards the Wagatha Christie cases.
“I had no control over it and that was hard. I knew what I was saying was right, but the fact that someone else took me to court and I had to prove it and say it was what it was was tough. It was a long period of time and I couldn’t get away from it,” she said.
“I felt like I wasn’t myself, I was snappy, and every Friday the lawyers rang me – the other team try and ruin your weekend by calling at the last point on Friday. They’d tell me what’s going on and then to try and have a nice weekend.
“I’d go away and start overthinking things, and start looking for things that he’s asking for. It got to 2am, Wayne would be waiting on the couch to watch something and eventually say ‘I’m going to bed’. It put a strain on family life, friends – I wasn’t sociable.”
